Snake's golf balls fetch $1400
January 11, 2008 - 2:32PM
Four golf balls swallowed by an unlucky carpet python and removed from its gut in a world-first operation have sold for $1401 in an online auction.
The balls were removed from the reptile in emergency surgery at the Gold Coast's Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary last week.
The balls had been put in a northern NSW henhouse to coax a reluctant hen to lay, but they almost spelled disaster for the 80cm-long snake, who mistook them for the real thing.
With their patient - dubbed Augusta - making a speedy recovery, veterinarians at the sanctuary decided to auction the balls on eBay, to raise money for a new wildlife hospital.
The sanctuary's executive marketing manager David Luxton said the wildlife hospital received no government funding, and relied solely on community and corporate contributions.
"This hospital is inundated with more than 4000 animals each year, and space is such a premium, we need a new hospital built as soon as possible to cope with the demand," Mr Luxton said.
More than 500 eBay bidders added the golf balls - which came with x-rays and photographs of the operation - to their "wanted items" list.
The auction was expected to attract worldwide interest, after Augusta's story grabbed headlines as far as Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan and Canada.
After intense bidding, an Australian will take home the goods.
Augusta is expected to be released into the wild.
